LYNDOCH COMMUNITY MARKET November 2021

The Lyndoch Community Market on Saturday November 13 lived up to its reputation again, attracting scores of people looking for that quirky or pre-loved treasure on offer from the many stallholders who set up their tables inside and outside the Lyndoch Community Hall every second Saturday in the month.

The Market offers a wide variety of goods including papercraft products, jewellery, slices, jams, preserves, candles, plants, books, papercraft products, artwork, woodware, antiques, garden art, toys, scones, biscuits, home-sewn items, embroidery and much more to tempt visitors, many of whom come from much further afield than the Barossa.  Stalls change every month to ensure there is always something new.

The Lyndoch Community Committee provides bacon and egg sandwiches or sausages'n'onion to satisfy the hungry - and barista coffee provides the required Sunday morning heart-starter.

The Market on December 11 is the last for 2021, so why not make the lost of it!

ABBEYFIELD (now Wirraminna) GETS LONG-SOUGHT-AFTER GRANT

Champagne corks popped and good Barossa wine flowed as Williamstown’s Abbeyfield Aged Care's Board, staff and residents saluted and celebrated the receipt of a Federal Government $2.8 million Grant enabling it to expand its residential aged care capacity to accommodate an additional 8 beds.

The awarding of the Grant in March 2019 was the result of Abbeyfield’s Strategic Plan put together in 2016 to provide direction for growth and future needs.

The Chair of the Abbeyfield Board, Simon Taylor thanked current Manager Gerry Lloyd, previous Manager Barbara Wieland, Treasurer John Wagner and all staff and volunteers who worked hard to secure the Grant.

“This grant will enable Abbeyfield Barossa to better serve our community as well as consolidate the sustainability of our community-run organsation,” Simon said.

“While there is a lot to do, our future is very bright.”

FEDERAL MP VISITS THE SOUTHERN BAROSSA

Following the recent rearrangement of Federal electoral boundaries, the Southern Barossa’s new representative in Federal Parliament is Tony Pasin, who took the time to get to know us during his ‘meet and greet’ tour of the Barossa in March 2019.

The tour gave Tony the opportunity to meet with local aged-care providers, the Barossa Local Drug Action Team and Southern Barossa businesses to discuss matters of local concern.

The visit consisted of:

  • A tour of Wirraminna  Barossa Residential Aged Care facility in Williamstown.

  • An open forum discussion with representatives from Wirraminna, Tanunda Lutheran Home and Wheatfields Freeling on issues impacting on regional aged care facilities.

  • A chat over coffee with members of the Local Drug Action Team to highlight issues with Alcohol and Drug Harm Reduction in regional areas.

  • A working lunch with local businesses at the Lyndoch Hotel to highlight issues impacting on Southern Barossa businesses.

  • A tour of local Sport and Recreation facilities, the Warren Reservoir, Lyndoch Rd, Chateau Yaldara and Lyndoch Hill.

Given that Tony’s electorate of Barker stretches from Mount Gambier to Renmark to the north and now includes the Barossa (an electorate about the size of Croatia!), Tony was very generous with his time.

All who attended greatly appreciated the opportunity with talk with him and to hear his advice on networking opportunities and of lessons learnt by other organisations with similar issues in other parts of his electorate.
Tony greatly appreciated the opportunity to engage with us and to better understand local issues.

SALUTE!  A TOAST AND TASTE OF ITALY FOR SOUTHERN BAROSSA VOLUNTEERS

Our volunteers have regular social catch ups and ‘thank you’ meets, often hosted by local wineries. At their catch-up in April 2019, they were treated like royalty, courtesy of Lou Miranda’s Winery at Rowland Flat.

Some 28 SBA volunteers were treated to a fun and educational Miranda wine-tasting ‘master class’, a sampling of the fine Italian food from Miranda’s restaurant menu, and later, a tour through the barrel-rooms where Miranda wines are nurtured.

Host for the event was Garth Wright, the (now retired) Miranda Cellar Master whose knowledge of Miranda wines and the various wine varieties is prodigious. As well as matching quality wines with great food, a highlight for volunteers was an opportunity to experience the winery and taking a deep-draft sniff direct from Miranda’s Muscat barrels.

The (then) Head of the Southern Barossa Alliance, Simon Taylor, said that these catch ups were a core part of promoting community spirit, volunteering and increasing local awareness of our tourist attractions.

“Not only was this another ‘bonding’ experience for our volunteers, but it also made them ambassadors for another iconic Southern Barossa winery,” Simon said.

"Spoilt as we are for choice of terrific wines in the Southern Barossa, the chance to ‘get up and personal’ with our winemakers and enjoy their hospitality is delightful - and cuts both ways.

“Our volunteers not only had a great time, but it provided us with more detailed knowledge of our region which enables us to make recommendations to friends and family and gives us informed ‘talking points’ when we discuss our region with visitors who attend our public functions, like the Tour Down Under’."

Mr Taylor said, by way of example, that while most visitors to the Barossa know about its German heritage, fewer know about its long Italian wine-making heritage, particularly in the Southern Barossa region.

“Lou Miranda of Lou Miranda Estate, Charlie Scalzi of Gods Hill Wines, Ross Virgara of Grapes of Ross and Ghi Galizzi of Galizzi Wines are all grape growers and award winning winemakers with a long Italian heritage full of passion and love for the land and good wine. This Italian connection adds great depth and richness to the Barossa experience contributing to the reason why 'We Love The Place We Live',” Simon said.

THE STARS TURN OUT FOR THE 'FOREST FROLIC' 2018

The Barossa Valley’s movers and shakers - and wine makers - gathered under the stars at the Woolshed on David and Kate Thorsteinsen’s property adjacent to the Warren Reservoir near Williamstown on Saturday February 17 to take part in the Forest Frolic, the bi-annual black-tie event to raise funds for Williamstown’s Abbeyfield Aged Care facility.

Under a cloudless sky and in perfect summer-night weather, the stars shone down on more than 120 people who were served a perfect meal before dancing the night away to tunes provided by Swing’n’Tonic, a 9-piece band which played all the classics to get the rockers and ‘jitter buggers’ up and moving!

Local wineries donated wines to the tables and for the popular fund-raising auction - and a band of merry helpers donated their time to make sure no-one went thirsty or hungry. Southern Barossa Alliance volunteers also helped with logistical support to assist with staging the event.

In total more than $5000 was raised to benefit Abbeyfield - and the event was described as a raging success by all who attended.

Were you there?  Or do you want to see what you missed out on?  Go get a coffee - or pour yourself a glass of fine Barossa wine - and turn up the volume to Frolic in the Forest with everyone who attended, by watching our video below.

Go on! You know you want to.....  (video lasts 10 mins 30 secs approx - video best viewed at this size)

PAINTING THE TOWNS RED FOR THE SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER IN JANUARY (2018)

With Lyndoch and Williamstown known for the fun they bring to the Santos Tour Down Under, regional artists and our school kids have been 'painting the towns' red' for this year's event by coming up with special works of art which now adorn the main streets of both towns.

At past events, our 'yarn bombers' and their creations decorating the Lyndoch Institute and Lyndoch's main street trees drew international attention - and while the trees and Institute will again wear their colorful woolly jumpers, this year, bike, wine, vines and forests have been the inspiration for those who ply their art not with knitting needles but with the slash of brush on canvas.

To create the works of art, the SBA hosted a 'Paint Off', where local artists gathered on Lyndoch's Village Green on Sunday January 7 for a 'Monet meets Masterchef' styled event, where they were given a set time to come up with their masterpieces.  To inspire them further, a sausage sizzle and drinks awaited!

See the results lining the Finish Line Straight in Lyndoch and in Williamstown - before they're snapped up by the world's art galleries!
